May 31, 2023

The Saeima has elected current Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkēvičs as the new president of Latvia.

This is reported by Delfi.

In the third round of voting, in which two candidates remained - Rinkēvičs and Uldis Pilens - the former received 52 votes, which is enough to be elected. The votes of the Social Democrats played a decisive role, as their candidate Elina Pinto dropped out after the second round.

In the first two rounds of voting, 42 MPs voted for Rinkevics.

In his address to the Sejm, the newly elected president thanked both those MPs who supported him and those who voted against him, and promised to do everything in his power for the security, unity, and prosperity of the country and to work closely with the Sejm and the government.

It is not yet known who will replace Rinkēvičs as foreign minister.
