German arms concern Rheinmetall on Thursday confirmed that it had received permission from the German Federal Antimonopoly Office to establish a joint venture with the Ukrainian Defense Industry (formerly Ukroboronprom).

Rheinmetall announced this on its website.

The German concern said that it had applied for permits from other federal agencies and expects a positive response from them "in the near future."

"The joint venture will be based in Kyiv and will be engaged in service and maintenance, as well as assembly, production, and development of military vehicles," the statement said.

The cooperation between Rheinmetall and the Ukrainian Defense Industry is aimed at strengthening the defense sector and national security of Ukraine through the gradual development of joint capabilities in the field of defense technologies.

In the first stage, the cooperation will focus on the maintenance and repair of equipment that Ukraine has received from Germany and other partners. Later, Rheinmetall says, it will be about joint production of certain types of defense products in Ukraine.

"In the future, cooperation between Rheinmetall and the Ukrainian Defense Industry may also include the joint development of military systems by teams of Ukrainian and German specialists, in particular for further export by Ukraine," the concern adds.
