Slovenia will be a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council

Jun 6, 2023

On Tuesday, the UN General Assembly elected Slovenia as a non-permanent member of the Security Council for 2024-2025.

This was commented on by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Slovenia Tanja Fajon.

Slovenia was elected to the UN Security Council under the quota of the so-called Eastern European Group, where Belarus, along with Belarus, was also applying for a seat. However, 153 members of the General Assembly voted for the Slovenian candidacy out of the minimum 128 required.

"Today is a great day for Slovenia. We have been elected as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council. I am proud of this wonderful result, which is the result of hard work," commented the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Slovenia Tanja Fajon.

This is the second time that Slovenia has been elected as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, having first served in the body in 1998-1999.

In addition to Slovenia, Algeria, Sierra Leone, South Korea, and Guyana will become the new non-permanent members of the UN Security Council starting in 2024. They will replace Albania, Brazil, Gabon, Ghana, and the United Arab Emirates, whose two-year term of office is coming to an end.
