Jun 14, 2024

Spain and Turkey have called on the international community to stop "looking the other way" and to end the war in Gaza, where Israel is conducting an operation to defeat the Hamas terrorist group.

This was stated by Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan during their joint press conference in Madrid, AP reports.

The two NATO member states reiterated their calls for an end to the fighting in Gaza and for more humanitarian aid to the Palestinians. Pedro Sanchez also demanded the release of hostages held by Hamas.

"For too long, the international community has looked the other way... it thought that without resolving this conflict we could live in peace and stability. What has happened in these eight months has opened the eyes of the world," the Spanish Prime Minister said.

He also called on other European and Western countries to follow the lead of Spain and Turkey, which have already recognized the Palestinian state, "because this is the only solution that can guarantee peace and security in the Middle East."
