The Economist wrote about the elections in Ukraine in 2025

Nov 14, 2024

There are rumors in the media that presidential elections in Ukraine could be held as early as the spring of 2025. But such a development is unlikely.

This was reported by RBC-Ukraine with reference to The Economist and an exclusive commentary by political scientist Igor Reiterovich for the RBC-Ukraine YouTube channel.

What The Economist wrote

According to the publication, the earliest date for the presidential election, which is already being discussed in Kyiv, is May 25, 2025.

At the same time, The Economist claims that preparations for the elections in Ukraine have allegedly already begun. In particular, regional election headquarters “have started working on candidate lists.”

At the same time, the Office of the President of Ukraine denies such rumors.

Political analyst's reaction

Political analyst Ihor Reiterovych noted that he could hypothetically imagine a ceasefire in a few months after Donald Trump's inauguration and the start of negotiations.

The Economist wrote about the elections in Ukraine in 2025.

“But just two or three months after the ceasefire, holding elections in Ukraine seems to me an unlikely idea. I will explain why. There are both objective and subjective aspects,” he added.

According to the expert, the objective point is that there is a decision of the Verkhovna Rada that elections in Ukraine should be held no earlier than 6 months after the end of the martial law regime. This is necessary to verify all registers, as well as for parties to be able to conduct election campaigns.

Also, as Reiterovich noted, the subjective point is that the martial law regime may not be canceled the day after the conditional truce between Ukraine and Russia.

Such a legal regime may drag on for at least a few more weeks, as it will be necessary to conduct an inspection on the demarcation line, launch demobilization and mobilization processes, and more.

“So if the issue of elections is raised in 2025, it will most likely be somewhere before the end of the year. That is, in the fall. Unfortunately, it won't work as quickly as The Economist says,” the political scientist said.
