"As long as bombs are falling on Ukraine, the situation there is dangerous. Today, ministers have once again demonstrated solidarity and decided that they will continue to offer protection to the Ukrainian people in the EU," said Nicole de Moer, Belgian Secretary of State for Asylum and Migration.

The temporary protection mechanism was launched on March 4, 2022. It was supposed to be in effect until March 4, 2025.

The extension does not change the decision of March 2022 on the categories of persons covered by temporary protection.

"The proposal for a further extension of temporary protection until March 4, 2026 takes place in the context of the unstable situation in Ukraine," the Council of the European Union noted.
