The situation in the South China Sea is deeply concerning, and China's recent actions in the disputed waterway are deeply destabilizing.

This was stated by US Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Daniel Kritenbrink, RBC-Ukraine reports with reference to Reuters.

The US diplomat made the announcement at a briefing in Hanoi on June 22 amid rising tensions between China and the Philippines in the South China Sea.

"We believe that China's actions, especially its recent actions around the Second Thomas Shoal (an underwater reef in the Spratly Islands. - ed.), towards the Philippines have been irresponsible, aggressive, dangerous, and deeply destabilizing," Kritenbrink said.

He also noted that the United States will continue to support its Philippine allies, and added that Washington has made it clear to Beijing publicly and privately that the Mutual Defense Treaty obligations with the Philippines are "ironclad."

"We believe that every country in the region, including China, should respect international law and behave responsibly in the maritime sphere," said the US assistant Secretary of State.
