The war in Ukraine has caused a migration surge in the Netherlands

Jul 5, 2023

Ukrainians fleeing the Russian invasion were the main reason for the increase in the number of immigrants to the Netherlands by almost 60% in 2022.

This was reported by the Central Statistical Office of the Netherlands.

A total of 403 thousand immigrants arrived in the Netherlands, which is 151 thousand more than a year earlier.

Much of this increase is due to the war in Ukraine. However, migration from other countries outside the European Union or the European Free Trade Association has also increased.

More than 108 thousand people came to the Netherlands in 2022, taking advantage of the Temporary Protection Directive due to the war in Ukraine.

Even excluding those from Ukraine, the total number of immigrants was higher than in 2019, the last year before the coronavirus pandemic.

The number of asylum seekers amounted to 27,600, the highest since 2016 and 30% higher than the previous year.
