President-elect Donald Trump is preparing a strategy to increase pressure on Iran, which includes a sharp increase in sanctions and restrictions on oil sales.
This was reported by RBC-Ukraine with reference to The Wall Street Journal.
The plan, according to sources familiar with its first steps, is aimed at ending Tehran's support for groups in the Middle East and curbing the country's nuclear program.
Trump plans to resume “maximum pressure” on Iran to force it to abandon its nuclear ambitions and stop funding groups that the United States considers terrorist. This approach is also likely to be reinforced by personal motivation, as Iran allegedly tried to organize assassination attempts on the former president and his advisers after they left office.
Former Trump officials have noted that the Iranian leadership may seek to avenge the death of General Qasem Soleimani, who was killed in a 2020 US drone strike.
According to experts, Trump is particularly determined to limit Iran's access to oil revenues. It is planned to impose sanctions on foreign ports and companies involved in the transshipment of Iranian oil. This approach is reminiscent of the strategy that Trump already used in his first term, when he sought to isolate Iran from international energy markets.
