Turkey warns Russia against interfering with shipping in the Black Sea

Aug 17, 2023

Turkey has discussed with Russia the incident with the bulk carrier Şükrü Okan, which was detained by the Russian military last weekend, and warned of the unacceptability of obstructing the movement of ships in the Black Sea.

This is stated in the message of the Center for Countering Disinformation (DMM) under the Communications Department of the Turkish President.

The DMM's message concerned the refutation of reports of an alleged "attack by the Russian military on a Turkish ship." They explained that the incident with the Şükrü Okan occurred in international waters, and the vessel, although owned by a Turkish company, was flying the flag of Panama.

"Despite all this, after interfering with the vessel's movement, the interlocutors in the Russian Federation were duly warned to avoid similar attempts to escalate tensions in the Black Sea," the Turkish administration added.
