France is modernizing some Mirage 2000-5 fighters. Earlier, these aircraft were promised to be transferred to Ukraine.

This was reported by RBC-Ukraine with reference to SudOuest.

“Part of the Mirage 2000-5, which France intends to deliver to Ukraine, will be “transformed” in Kazo (French air base - ed.). This will be done in order to provide them with the ability to shoot at ground targets,” the statement said.

However, the French have not announced the specific aspects of the modernization, but it is likely to be about adapting the aircraft to the Armement air-sol modulaire (AASM) bombs that have already been supplied to Ukraine.

This modernization indicates that the Mirage-2000-5 will move away from its traditional role as an interceptor. After all, when they were created, the possibility of using air-to-ground munitions was not envisaged.
