This is reported by the Office of Foreign Assets Control of the US Treasury Department (OFAC), Ukrinform reports.

"Today's actions are directed against Mahmoud Ahmadinejad because he allowed the illegal detention of our citizens, causing inordinate pain and suffering to both the victims and their families," said Under Secretary of the Treasury for Counterterrorism and Financial Intelligence Brian Nelson.

It is noted that the restrictions against Ahmadinejad were imposed "due to material assistance to the Iranian Ministry of Intelligence and Security (MOIS)". At the same time, the State Department imposed additional restrictions on MOIS.

The sanctions were imposed in accordance with the White House Executive Order on efforts to bring hostages and illegally detained U.S. citizens home. This document expands the tools to deter and punish those responsible for holding hostages, as well as for the removal or unlawful detention of US citizens abroad.
