Erdogan's party loses in local elections in Istanbul and Ankara

The party of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is losing in the local elections in Istanbul and Ankara, the largest cities in Turkey.

According to preliminary vote counts, the current mayor of Istanbul, Ekrem Imamoglu, is ahead of his rival from the president's party.

After opening 41.43% of the ballot boxes, Imamoglu received 50% of the support, compared to 41.26% for Murat Kurum, a former minister of Erdogan's national government.

"Based on the data we have collected, I can say that the commitment and trust of our citizens in us has indeed been demonstrated. We are very pleased with the current picture," Imamoglu said.

The current mayor of Ankara, Mansur Yavas, who represents the opposition, also announced his victory over his rival from Erdogan's party.
