Europe will have to increase aid to Ukraine after Trump's victory

The European Union should “consider a scenario in which support for Ukraine” from Europe will increase after Donald Trump's victory in the US presidential election.

At a press conference after a meeting in Warsaw with Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski, Borrell emphasized that Ukraine “needs support at this crucial moment.”

The EU diplomat said, in particular, that EU ministers will discuss this issue during the next Foreign Affairs Council, which will take place on November 18.

“We cannot have a situation where Americans act and Europeans only react. We must take responsibility ourselves. We must assure Ukraine that our support will continue, but this requires appropriate resources and determination. It requires political will and, above all, financial resources,” Borrell emphasized.

In his turn, Sikorski said that Europe is obliged to make every effort to uphold the principles of international law.

He also noted that a very serious discussion is expected at the next meeting of the Foreign Affairs Council.

“What we do or do not do in this Foreign Affairs Council can determine the future credibility of the EU and the future of the EU as a strategic player,” said the Polish diplomat.

He emphasized that Europe is responsible for its citizens, its neighbors and future generations. “It is obliged to make every effort to reach a fair agreement, to uphold the principles of international law, to restore the taboo that borders in Europe cannot be changed by force,” Sikorski said. “If these rules are no longer applied as a result of our actions or inaction, we face a dark future,” he added.

Josep Borrell visited Ukraine over the weekend and met with the Polish Foreign Minister in Warsaw on November 12 in the morning.
