Russian troops are successfully using the recent capture of Vuhledar to achieve tactically significant gains south of Kurakhove in support of ongoing offensive operations aimed at flattening the front line and eliminating the Ukrainian advance in the western Donetsk region.

Russian troops intensified offensive operations in western Donetsk region in early September 2024 and are currently trying to capture Kurakhove from the north and south and align the front line between Sontsovka (northwest of Kurakhove) and Shakhtarske (northwest of Vuhledar).

Analysts note that further Russian advances into and west of Dalne could force Ukrainian forces to retreat from positions in the pocket north and northeast of Vuhledar and allow Russian forces to advance relatively unimpeded along the C051104 road.

Such an advance would allow Russian forces to continue to pressure Ukrainian positions in Kurakhove from the south.
