Kuleba on the permission of the AFU to destroy Russian bombers

Jul 5, 2024

Ukraine will eventually receive permission to launch strikes against Russian bombers with weapons provided by Western partners. This will make it possible to hit enemy planes at airfields on the territory of the aggressor country and make it impossible to attack Ukrainian cities with anti-aircraft missiles.

This is reported by RBC-Ukraine with reference to the statement of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Dmytro Kuleba in an interview with ELTA Zoom.

The official noted that there are "many components and many decisions that need to be made" to change the trend at the front and in the situation with airstrikes by the occupiers on the territory of Ukraine.

"Some of them depend on us, and we make those decisions. Some decisions are made by our partners, and they also tend to understand that these decisions need to be made," he said.

First of all, Kuleba spoke about the permission to use Western weapons outside the borders of Ukraine against Russian military facilities.

"But if I had to name two main decisions that need to be made to reverse the trend you mention, I would name the destruction of Russian bombers at airfields and in the air. This is a real sore spot for our Ground Forces," the Foreign Minister emphasized.

According to him, the Ukrainian side considers the main reason for the success of the Russian invaders to be "simply the endless number of guided bombs dropped on our ground forces."

"They massively destroy and kill, and sometimes they simply raze positions to the ground and there is nothing to defend," Kuleba explained.

In addition, the minister noted the importance of a sufficient number of artillery shells and the need to quickly deliver them to Ukrainian defenders.

"As for the decisions that will allow us to destroy the Russian bombers, they are already being prepared. So, we are working on it. I am sure that these decisions will be made," Kuleba said, adding that it is "only a matter of time."
-

"Because the threat from these bombers is immeasurably great. We cannot intercept a guided bomb in the air. So, the only way to avoid this is to destroy the bomber. We can do this by hitting planes on airfields or shooting down planes in the air," he said.

Therefore, Kuleba summarized, Ukraine needs long-range missiles to "reach the airfields, or a sufficient number of air defense systems and interceptors so that these planes can be shot down from the air."

"Sooner or later, it will happen. We ask our partners to make it happen sooner rather than later," the official added.
