The Romanian Air Force aerial surveillance system on Tuesday detected a small aerial target that resembles a meteorological balloon.

This is said in a statement of the Romanian Defense Ministry, writes European Pravda.

The object was detected at about 12:30 p.m. at an altitude of about 11,000 meters in the national airspace, in southeastern Romania.

"Romanian authorities applied all standard procedures from the moment the object was detected, and two MiG-21 LanceR Romanian Air Force aircraft from the NATO-led Air Police Combat Service took to the air from the 86th Air Base in Feteste around 12:40 and headed to the area from where the air target was reported," the statement said.

The crews of the two planes did not confirm the aerial target either visually or on the airborne radar.

The planes stayed in the area for about 30 minutes, until the air situation was fully clarified, after which they returned to the airbase.

"The Romanian Air Force constantly monitors, in cooperation with Alliance forces, the national airspace and the surrounding area," the ministry said.
