Sri Lanka to apply to join BRICS - The Morning
Sri Lanka has decided to formally apply for membership in the BRICS international organization. It includes Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.
This was reported by RBC-Ukraine with reference to The Morning.
According to Sri Lanka's Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath, the application emphasizes Sri Lanka's intention to strengthen ties with emerging economies and diversify its multilateral relations.
However, Foreign Ministry Secretary Aruni Wijewardane said that his country will formally apply for membership during the BRICS summit to be held in Kazan, Russia, on October 23-24.
Sri Lanka is a country located on the island of the same name, formerly known as Ceylon. It is located south of India in the Indian Ocean and was a former British colony. As a result of a series of mistakes in economic policy in recent years, Sri Lanka has become economically and politically dependent on China
