Sri Lanka has decided to formally apply for membership in the BRICS international organization. It includes Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.
This was reported by RBC-Ukraine with reference to The Morning.
According to Sri Lanka's Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath, the application emphasizes Sri Lanka's intention to strengthen ties with emerging economies and diversify its multilateral relations.
However, Foreign Ministry Secretary Aruni Wijewardane said that his country will formally apply for membership during the BRICS summit to be held in Kazan, Russia, on October 23-24.
