The leader of Lithuania's main opposition party, the Social Democrats, Vilija Blinkevičiūtė, expects to become the next prime minister of the NATO member state after her party won a majority of votes in the October 13 parliamentary elections.
This was reported by RBC-Ukraine with reference to Reuters.
According to the final results, the Social Democrats won 19% of the vote, ahead of Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonite's center-right Union of the Fatherland party with 18% and the anti-government Niemen's Dawn party with 15%.
If elected, Blinkevičiūtė's Social Democrats are expected to maintain a tough stance on Russia, including increased defense spending, and to seek to improve worn-out public services and raise taxes on the wealthy.
Asked by journalists whether she expects to lead the next government, Blinkevičiūtė replied: “I have no doubt about it.”
Blinkevičiūtė said she is already in talks to form a coalition with two other left-wing parties.
