DPRK-South Korea tensions may escalate due to US elections

Oct 15, 2024

Russia may try to influence the US elections by escalating the conflict between North Korea and South Korea. But Moscow does not need a large-scale war.

This was stated by Volodymyr Fesenko, head of the Penta Center for Applied Political Studies, in a commentary for RBC-Ukraine.

He reminded that back in the summer there were rumors of Russia's attempts to complicate the situation of US President Joe Biden and indirectly Kamala Harris in the upcoming presidential election in November.

“They are not interested in a big war, but they would like to provoke a symbolic conflict on the border between the Koreas. To show the weakness of the Democrats. To give an argument to Trump (former US President Donald Trump - ed.), saying that if he were president, there would be no war, and under Biden “one war after another”. I do not reject this option,” Fesenko said.

But, as the political scientist pointed out, only a demonstrative conflict is possible, but not a large-scale war, which Pyongyang's allies do not need.
