Finland to Decide Thursday whether to Provide Ukraine with Tanks

Feb 22, 2023

On Thursday, February 23, Finland is to decide how it will participate in the European project to supply Leopard battle tanks to Ukraine.

This is reported by the broadcaster Yle.

On Thursday, the issue will be decided at a meeting of the Government Council on the proposal of the President. The issue will be considered by the government as a proposal from the Ministry of Defense.

It is tentatively assumed that Finland will be involved in the project either by participating in the maintenance of the tanks or by transferring some tanks. The number of tanks that can be transferred will not necessarily be specified in the decision.

Defense Minister Mikko Savola said in late January that Finland would participate in the Leopard project. However, the bid cannot be large because Finland has a long land border with Russia, and tanks are also important for Finland's defense.

Finland has about 200 German-made battle tanks.
