German Foreign Minister Criticized China's Peace Plan

Feb 24, 2023

German Foreign Minister Annalena Berbock criticized China's position paper on the Russian war in Ukraine.

This was reported by Tagesschau.

"China has a special responsibility as a permanent member of the Security Council. It could use its influence on Russia to persuade it to abandon its plans," Baerbock said on the sidelines of a UN Security Council meeting marking the first anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine in New York.

The federal government will do whatever it takes to preserve the peaceful order of the U.N. Charter, she said.

"Otherwise no small country will be able to live safely in the future," the German foreign minister said.

The Chinese document contains many well-known positions. "It is important that China warns against nuclear escalation," she said.

President Zelenskyy believes that China's so-called "peace plan" has points that can be worked with, and wants "some thoughts" he disagrees with.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg commented on the Chinese plan, noting that China had little credibility because it failed to condemn the illegal invasion of Ukraine.
