Germany closes its consulate in Kaliningrad

Nov 30, 2023

The German Consulate in the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad on the Baltic Sea will close on Thursday.

This is stated in an official statement on the agency's website, which does not specify the reason for the closure, reports Evropeiska Pravda.

"The Consulate General in Kaliningrad has been closed since November 30, 2023. From now on, the Consulate General in St. Petersburg is responsible for consular and passport issues in the district of the Consulate General in Kaliningrad, while the Visa Section of the Embassy in Moscow is responsible exclusively for processing visa issues," the statement said.

Four of Germany's five consulates in Russia were closed in May when Berlin, at the request of Russia, tried to reduce the number of civil servants in the country to 350.

The German Foreign Ministry said that with this number, it would be difficult for the consulates to continue their regular work.

After Russia's invasion of Ukraine last year, Germany, along with other European countries, expelled dozens of Russian diplomats.
