Government comments on statements about 30 years before joining NATO

May 27, 2024

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz's words that Ukraine would not become a NATO member for at least 30 years referred to the situation as of 2022. Currently, there is no such discussion. This was stated by German government spokesman Steffen Gebestreit, Bild reports.

Gebestreit noted that "the situation has completely changed," so Scholz's words about 30 years are irrelevant.

According to him, such discussions were held before Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Now, the issue of Ukraine's accession to NATO is a "completely different discussion" that is "not currently underway," Gebestreit said.

He added that if such discussions do take place, they will be "under different circumstances" than they were at the beginning of the full-scale war.

On May 26, Olaf Scholz said that before Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, he had assured Russian dictator Vladimir Putin that Ukraine would not become a NATO member for at least 30 years.
