The Greek government has officially approved a proposal to purchase 20 F-35 Joint Strike Fighters from the United States as part of a large-scale modernization of its Armed Forces.

This was reported by the AP.

During a visit to a military air base near Athens, Greek Defense Minister Nikos Dendias announced that the Greek government had signed and sent a letter of agreement to the United States to purchase the fighter jets. He added that the purchase of the F-35 would create a “powerful deterrent presence in our region.”

At a briefing on Thursday, Greek government spokesman Pavlos Marinakis, commenting on the deal, called the current campaign to modernize the Armed Forces the most important in “many decades.”

“We will continue to implement this major program, equipping our country and strengthening its defense,” he emphasized.

Deliveries of F-35s to Greece are expected to begin in 2028, with the total value of the deal at around $3.5 billion.
