Iran continues to help Russia with drones - White House

May 15, 2023

The United States sees signs of a deepening Russian-Iranian military partnership in Moscow's attempts to obtain new batches of Iranian Shahed drones, which it uses to attack Ukraine's infrastructure.

According to the AP, this was stated by John Kirby, Strategic Communications Coordinator for the White House National Security Council, at a briefing on Monday.

According to US estimates, Russia is seeking to purchase additional modern attack drones from Iran for use in the war in Ukraine after the previously acquired batch of 400 drones has already been used by Russian forces.

"Iran continues to provide Russia with unilateral strike UAVs. Since August, Iran has provided Russia with more than 400 UAVs, mostly of the Shahed type," Kirby said.

"Russia has utilized the majority of these UAVs, using them to strike Ukrainian critical infrastructure inside Ukraine. By providing Russia with these UAVs, Iran is directly contributing to Russia's war of aggression in Ukraine," he added.
