Latvia is not going to return its license to Russian TV channel Dozhd

Jan 4, 2023

There is no talk in Latvia about returning the license to the Russian TV channel Dozhd, but there is an understanding of the need to increase broadcasting in the Latvian language.

Chairman of the National Electronic Media Council (NEPLP) Ivars Abolins stated this in an interview with Latvian Radio on Wednesday, Delfi.

According to Abolins, there are 252 media outlets in Latvia, of which 127 are in Russian, while there are only 42 in Latvian.

And that is after 121 media outlets associated with Russia were excluded from the information space, Abolins added. A year ago, the dominance of Russian media was even greater. "Arguments that something has been taken away from Russian speakers are false because Russian speakers can watch a very large part of the content offered in Russian, while Latvians can watch only a small part," Abolins noted.
