NATO Summit to approve "special" invitation for Ukraine

Jul 11, 2023

Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda sees the readiness of NATO leaders to approve a decision that would mention a certain "invitation" to Ukraine.

He stated this in a conversation with journalists at the NATO summit, a correspondent of the European Truth reports from Vilnius.

When asked whether the Alliance's decision would contain the word "invitation," Nausėda said he was positive, but emphasized that this mention would be special.

"I think there will be an invitation (in the Alliance's decision on Ukraine), but an invitation to move forward, not just to open the door to joining NATO right now because then we will have a discussion about activating Article 5," he said.

As you know, Article 5 of the NATO Common Defense Treaty will be activated if Ukraine completes its accession procedure. Kyiv also agrees that the accession procedure will not be completed as long as the armed confrontation with Russia continues.
