Orban tries to present himself as a peacemaker

Jul 3, 2024

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban may have used his unannounced visit to Kyiv on July 2 to present himself as a peacemaker after Hungary's presidency of the Council of the European Union, but Orban's efforts are unlikely to lead to lasting peace in Ukraine, according to the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).

The Hungarian government emphasized that Orban met with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy specifically to ask him to "consider a temporary ceasefire" and "speed up peace talks, given that "the rules of international diplomacy are slow and complicated."

ISW continues to assess that a ceasefire in Ukraine on the current lines is unlikely to deter further Russian aggression and will only give Russia critical time to rebuild its forces and prepare for future aggression against Ukraine.
