This was the second and last live debate on state television, in which reformist Massoud Peseshkian and former nuclear negotiator, supporter of the hard line traditional for modern Iran, Saeed Jalili, were opposed.

Pezeshkian said that the sanctions imposed by the West have hit Iran's economy hard. He pointed to a 40% inflation rate over the past four years and rising poverty levels. "We live in a society in which many people are begging in the streets," he said, adding that his administration will work “immediately” to try to lift sanctions and “restore” the economy.

Pesekian also said that he would find a solution to renew the nuclear deal with world powers by discussing the plan with the country's parliament and finding possible alternatives. "No government in history has been able to thrive in a cage," he said, referring to the impact of sanctions on Iran's economy.

Jalili, who strongly opposed the 2015 deal, said during the debate that the United States must honor its commitments on par with those "we have fulfilled" and that he would resume negotiations on the nuclear deal.
