The U.S. has not yet decided how much money it will transfer to Ukraine

Jul 3, 2024

The United States has not yet determined the amount of payments to Ukraine that will be made from the proceeds of Russia's frozen assets. This topic will be the main focus of today's talks between the heads of the G7 treasuries.

This was reported by RBC-Ukraine with reference to Politico.

In June, the leaders of the G7 countries agreed that each of them would send Ukraine a loan to be repaid at the expense of the annual profit received from immobilized Russian assets by the end of the year. But Washington has yet to decide how much it can provide, said one EU official, who requested anonymity to discuss the sensitive negotiations.

At the same time, the United States needs to get Congressional approval. But lawmakers have little desire to involve them in the process, as Republican opposition could drag it out until the end of the year.

For its part, the European Union has proposed several options to limit Washington's risks.

"However, technocrats can only do so much - their political masters have the final say on how much each country can give to Ukraine," the publication reports.
