Protests against the far-right broke out on the Place de la République in Paris on Sunday evening, where left-wing voters gathered to express support for the New People's Front, which came in second in the first round of elections.

According to police estimates, about 8,000 people gathered on the square.

Some people carried cardboard signs with the inscription: "We will not leave France to the fascists", "Bardella - out" (Jordan Bardella is the leader of the far-right National Rally - Ed.) Some young people were photographed in tears.

The protesters also criticized President Emmanuel Macron and his immigration policy.

Jean-Luc Melenchon, the left-wing leader of the France Unconquered party, addressed the crowd on the Place de la République.

The media published photos of a barricade set on fire near the rally venue and broken windows in a McDonald's fast food restaurant, although the rally was mostly peaceful.

Street demonstrations against the victory of the right-wing populists also took place in cities such as Strasbourg, Lyon, Nantes and Lille.
