Moscow is sending thousands of Central Asian migrants to war with Ukraine in order to avoid recruiting people who are more politically active.

This was reported by RBC-Ukraine with reference to the British Ministry of Defense on Twitter.

As noted in the report, speaking at the St. Petersburg International Legal Forum on June 27, 2024, the head of the Investigative Committee of Russia, Alexander Bastrykin, said that the Russian authorities had identified 30,000 migrants who had recently become Russian citizens and were not registered with the military.

Bastrykin also boasted that 10,000 of them had already been sent to Ukraine. He claimed that these migrants would dig trenches and perform other duties in the rear areas.

According to British intelligence, Russian independent media have previously reported that security forces are conducting a campaign of legal harassment against migrants, especially those from Central Asia, in an attempt to induce them to join the Russian army in exchange for citizenship or to avoid arrest on trumped-up charges.

"This is probably another ingenious way to encourage recruitment while trying to limit the impact on those parts of the Russian population that are more politically active," the British Ministry of Defense said.
