In statements to the press after the bilateral talks on July 2, the Hungarian leader admitted that he had offered his Ukrainian counterpart an immediate ceasefire on the line of contact with Russian troops that exists now.

Orban emphasized that he was not opposed to Ukraine's plans to end the war, but considered them too long to implement.

"I told Mr. President that his initiatives take a long time because of the rules of international diplomacy. Therefore, I asked Mr. President to think about whether it is possible to do something a little different: to cease fire and then negotiate with Russia, because a ceasefire would speed up the pace of these negotiations," Orban said.

However, Orban emphasized that he did not insist on his initiative and accepted Ukrainian arguments.

"I am very grateful to the president for his frank opinion on this issue," he said, promising to convey what he heard to other EU leaders.
