Russia is unlikely to be able to “absorb the West as a whole” - Orban

May 25, 2024

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said that all fears of a Russian attack on any NATO member state are unfounded. He explained his position by the fact that the war in Ukraine has been going on for three years, which indicates the limited capabilities of the Russian side.

“The Russian army is waging a serious and difficult war against the Ukrainians. If the Russians were strong enough to defeat the Ukrainians in one go, they would have done it by now,” Reuters quoted him as saying.

Oran also reminded how much the capabilities of the North Atlantic Alliance exceed those of Russia

“I do not think it is logical that Russia, which cannot even defeat Ukraine, will suddenly come and absorb the entire Western world. The chances of this are tiny,” he emphasized.

The Hungarian politician said that he considers all statements about the Russian threat to NATO countries “a prelude to deeper Western intervention in the war in Ukraine.”
