White House: Funds for Ukraine to run out by end of year

Dec 4, 2023

The White House has warned that the funds allocated to help Ukraine will run out by the end of the year.

This is stated in a letter from the Director of the US Office of Management and Budget Shalanda Young to Congressional leaders, as cited by the Financial Times.

"Without congressional action, we will run out of resources to purchase more weapons and equipment for Ukraine by the end of the year, as well as to provide equipment from U.S. military stockpiles," Young wrote to the leaders of the Republican and Democratic parties.

She emphasized that Congress's failure to approve new support would "bring Kyiv to its knees on the battlefield" and "increase the likelihood of Russian military victories."

"There is no magic pot of funding that will help us cope with this task. We are out of money and almost out of time," the official emphasized.

She reminded me that the US military aid packages to Ukraine have already become smaller.

Young added that US support is crucial and cannot be replaced by others.

"If Ukraine's economy collapses, they will not be able to continue fighting, period. Putin understands this well, which is why Russia has made the destruction of the Ukrainian economy a central element of its strategy - as you can see in its attacks on Ukraine's grain exports and energy infrastructure," the letter says.
