The head of the Commission of Inquiry into War Crimes and Other Abuses Committed During Russia's Invasion of Ukraine, Eric Mesé, said that the Russian military tortured some Ukrainian victims to death.
Mesé told the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva that his team "collected additional evidence indicating that the use of torture by Russian armed forces in the areas they controlled was widespread and systematic," Ukrinform reports.
"In some cases, torture was used with such cruelty that it caused the death of the victim," he said.
The UN Special Commission emphasized that the violations committed by the Russian military in Ukraine, including the use of torture, may constitute crimes against humanity.
Russia was given the opportunity to respond to the accusations at a hearing of the UN Human Rights Council, but no Russian representative attended.
