Azerbaijan agrees on new gas supplies to the EU

Sep 6, 2024

Azerbaijan is negotiating to expand natural gas exports to at least three new European countries. There is optimism in this regard.

This was stated by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, RBC-Ukraine reports citing Bloomberg.

At a forum in Italy, Aliyev said that Azerbaijan already supplies gas to eight European countries and has an agreement with the region to double exports by 2027.

“We just want to support these countries (in Europe) and Ukraine. We have a certain optimism, I think there is a ground for a breakthrough,” he said, without naming the countries.

Aliyev also confirmed that Moscow and Kyiv have approached him with a proposal to facilitate gas transit through Ukraine to Europe after the current transit contract expires in December.

Europe is looking for new gas deals to try to maintain supplies after flows from Russia are set to decline in 2022. Flows could be further reduced when the agreement that allows Russian gas to transit through Ukraine to the European Union expires at the end of the year. It is unclear whether a workaround can be found. Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said that he will not allow Russia to profit from the transportation of gas through the country's pipelines.
