Czech farmers decide to postpone protests

May 17, 2024

Czech farmers have canceled a protest that was to take place next week in Prague in order not to aggravate the atmosphere after the assassination attempt on Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico.

This was reported by Ceske Noviny.

The farmers want to calm the situation and reduce the risk that something could happen during the protest. They have not yet set a new date for the protest, said Jan Dolezal, president of the Agrarian Chamber.

The Agricultural Union (ZS) told ČTK this morning that preparations for the protests have been going on for a very long time and that farmers are still counting on them to materialize. According to Doležal, a new date will be determined following talks with the ministers of agriculture and finance.

By postponing the planned protest, the farmers want to calm the situation and create space for negotiations, the president of the Agrarian Chamber said. Farmers also want to postpone the protest for security reasons. “So that we don't expose the participants or government officials to security risks,” Dolezal said.

Already on Thursday, the unions canceled the demonstration scheduled for Tuesday. They said they wanted to contribute to calming the situation after Wednesday's assassination attempt on Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico.
