Czech Republic wants to receive 15 Leopard 2A4 tanks from Germany

Feb 21, 2024

The Czech Republic is negotiating with Germany to receive 15 more Leopard 2A4 tanks as compensation for military assistance to Ukraine.

Czech Defense Minister Jana Černohová announced this on February 21, according to ČTK.

During 2022-2023, Germany handed over 14 Leopard 2A4 tanks to the Czech Republic in exchange for its support for Ukraine. Also, by the end of 2024, the Czech side is to receive one Büffel 3 repair and evacuation vehicle on the Leopard 2A4 chassis.

"Simultaneously with this transfer, we received an offer from the Germans, who asked if we would be interested in 15 more tanks for which we could pay something," Chernokhova said.

She added that if such an agreement is concluded, the Czech Republic will have 42 Leopard 2A4 tanks and three repair and recovery vehicles. "We could reach the numbers that the army already considers necessary for tank battalions and for the creation of a heavy brigade," the minister said.

The Czech army is currently using modernized T-72M4SZ tanks and plans to keep the modernized T72 tanks in service until it find a replacement. Instead, unmodernized tanks, the Czech Defense Minister said, could be transferred to Ukraine.
