EU diplomat allows Moldova to join EU without Transnistria

Apr 10, 2024

EU Ambassador to Moldova Janis Marejks has admitted that Moldova could join the European Union without the territories on the left bank of the Dniester River that are not controlled by Chisinau, although he called this option not the best.

Majeix spoke to journalists on the eve of the International Mayors' Summit in Chisinau, Ukrinform quoted him as saying.

The diplomat said that the EU wants to see Moldova join the European Union together with reintegrated Transnistria. But at the same time, it does not want to see the country held hostage to a political settlement because it should not be held responsible for something it cannot necessarily influence.

"We cannot rule out that the Right Bank, the territory controlled by the constitutional authorities, will be the first to join. And then the left bank would join, but this is not the best option for us," said Majeix.

The EU expects to see more clarity in the coming years about both the readiness and interest of the Transnistrian "de facto" authorities to participate in this process, the ambassador added.
