Europe needs to switch to a war economy, and it also needs to produce faster and more weapons as part of a new defense industrial strategy.
This was stated by EU Internal Market Commissioner Thierry Breton, The Guardian reports.
He added that European defense must change the paradigm.
"This also means the European defense industry must take more risks, with our support by giving them greater visibility," the European Commissioner said.
Breton added that Europe must take more responsibility for its own security by building defense capabilities that will allow it to act together with European allies, but also autonomously. He also spoke about the need to create a European pillar of NATO.
According to him, the bloc has already increased its industrial base for the production of artillery ammunition to 1 million units per year and will double this figure in 2025. The same should now happen with all other necessary equipment for defense and security.
"For a credible European defense, we must also have adequate budgetary ambition," Breton added.-
We are talking about special and additional investments in defense in the amount of about 100 billion euros.
