France: Russia cannot and should not win

May 19, 2023

This is the fifth time that Russia has convened a UN Security Council meeting on the supply of weapons to Ukraine, but "repeating this exercise ad nauseam will not make the parallel reality come true."

According to Censor.NET, this was reported by Ukrinform.

This was stated by French Permanent Representative to the United Nations Nicolas de Riviere at a meeting of the UN Security Council on Thursday.

The end of this war and its negative consequences depend solely on Russia, and no one but Russia still seeks to continue this conflict, de Riviere emphasized.

"What does Russia expect? That arms supplies to Ukraine will stop so that Russia can win this war and impose its will? And then what? Then we can move on to something else, to new aggression. Russia cannot and should not win this conflict," said the French Permanent Representative. According to him, this contradicts the principles of the United Nations.
"We cannot agree to a peace where everyone's sovereignty and security depend only on the balance of power. It is for all these reasons that France has decided, together with its partners, to support the Ukrainian people in their right to exercise legitimate self-defense," he added.

France will continue to support Ukraine both bilaterally and within the European Union, "taking into account Ukraine's most urgent needs in order to strengthen its defense capabilities," he explained.

De Riviere emphasized that while the West legally supplies arms to Ukraine,

"Russia seeks to acquire them illegally to replenish its dwindling stockpile, buying drones from Iran and missiles and ammunition from North Korea."
