Germany began to test the RCH-155 SAU

Feb 7, 2023

The Bundeswehr began testing a new self-propelled artillery unit RCH-155, and the first customer will be Ukraine.

About this writes Welt.

The 155mm is similar to the Panzerhaubitze 2000 SAU but is mounted on a Boxer-wheeled vehicle. Germany, together with the Netherlands, has supplied 14 Panzerhaubitze units to Ukraine. Now the next generation of howitzers for the Bundeswehr is being purchased.

The RCH155 wheeled howitzer, developed by the Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW) weapons company, has unique capabilities because it does not need to stop firing shells. This has tremendous advantages because it makes detection and combats more difficult.

The RCH-155 is capable of automatically firing nine projectiles per minute that hit targets from 40 to 50 kilometers or even more, depending on the type of ammunition. The vehicle, which weighs almost 40 tons, has eight wheels instead of two tracks like the Panzerhaubitze 2000, and is therefore very mobile on the road and can reach speeds of over 100 km/h.
