Germany expels two Iranian diplomats

Feb 22, 2023

In response to the death sentence of German-Iranian citizen Jamshid Sharmahd, the German Foreign Ministry declared two employees of the Iranian Embassy as undesirable persons.

This was reported by Tagesschau.

Federal Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said that they were "asked to leave Germany as soon as possible." Because of the death sentence, she also summoned the chargé d'affaires of the Iranian embassy in Germany.

"He was informed that we do not accept the mass violation of the rights of a German citizen," the minister said.

"We call on Iran to overturn Jamshid Sharmahd's death sentence and allow him a fair and proper appeal process," Baerbock said.

The minister had already said Tuesday that the death sentence "will lead to a clear response." An Iranian court previously sentenced a 67-year-old man to death on terrorism charges. Iran announced Sharmahd's arrest in August 2020. According to his family, the German-Iranian national, who had most recently been living in the United States, was kidnapped by Iranian intelligence services during a transplant in Dubai and taken to Iran. His trial began in February 2022.
