Feb 22, 2024

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz supports the appointment of Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte as the next NATO Secretary General.

This was stated by German Federal Government spokesman Steffen Gebestreit, as quoted by n-tv.

According to Gebestreit, Scholz "supports the candidacy of Mark Rutte for the post of the new NATO Secretary General."

"With his vast experience, extensive knowledge of security policy, and strong diplomatic skills, Mark Rutte is an outstanding candidate for NATO Secretary General," added Scholz's representative.

As you know, NATO is seeking to appoint a successor to outgoing Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg ahead of the Alliance's 75th anniversary summit in Washington in July.
