Japan has no plans to join NATO but is discussing the opening of an Alliance liaison office in Tokyo.

This was stated by Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, Reuters reports.

"I am not aware of any decisions made by NATO to establish this office," Kishida said, commenting on the statement by Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi on the opening of a NATO liaison office.

The Japanese prime minister added that his country has no plans to join NATO in any way.
