Johnson is actively looking for ways of providing aid to Ukraine

Speaker of the US House of Representatives Mike Johnson is looking for the best options for resolving the issue of allocating financial assistance to Ukraine.

This was stated by Republican Congressman Matt Gaetz, CNN reports.

"I gave the speaker some unsolicited advice. That we’ve got to get into a fighting posture. And I was very pleased with how the speaker received that advice. The speaker wants to put wins on the board for House Republicans, and we better start doing that. I’m glad the speaker hasn’t rolled over to the $95 billion Ukraine supplemental that the Senate passed, and I think that he’s forging a better path on that issue as we speak," Gaetz said.

According to CNN, whether Johnson keeps his job will largely depend on how he handles a divisive issue among Republicans - the allocation of a large financial aid package to Ukraine.

After threats from far-right Republican Marjorie Taylor Green against Johnson for putting a bipartisan spending bill to a vote, the spokesman gained the support of some other far-right figures, including Gaetz. At the same time, Gaetz did not specify how Johnson intends to address the bailout.

According to CNN, people who have spoken to the speaker in recent days say that, aware of the threat of resignation over Ukraine funding, he worked with key aides over the two-week Easter break to chart a course for his strategy on the issue.

At the same time, Democrats made it clear that they would help Johnson retain his position if he pushed through a bill on Ukraine that they would definitely support. At the same time, a number of Democrats emphasized that if he insists on unacceptable provisions, such as spending cuts or new migration restrictions, he risks alienating both Democrats and right-wing Republicans who oppose aid to Ukraine.
