Dec 28, 2022

The sanctions against Russia cannot be lifted even after all the territories of Ukraine have been liberated. First, the Russian Federation must recognize Ukraine's borders and sovereignty, as well as pay compensation.

This was reported by RBC-Ukraine with reference to the report of Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkevics on the results and new plans in the field of foreign policy.

In his opinion, to lift the sanctions, Russia must recognize the independence, sovereignty and internationally recognized borders of Ukraine, as well as pay for the reconstruction of the ruined objects. The minister stressed that Latvia is ready to intensify the sanctions pressure, as well as to prevent the circumvention of sanctions together with partners.

Rinkevics noted that sanctions are a tool that limits Russia's ability to finance hostilities and makes war more expensive.

The Latvian foreign minister added that his country supported the decision at the EU level to direct frozen Russian assets to the reconstruction of Ukraine, as well as to introduce criminal liability for circumventing sanctions.

Earlier the Latvian prime minister said that a cease-fire in Ukraine would benefit Russia, while later the aggressor might toughen its attacks.
