Lithuania, together with Poland and two other European countries, has applied for partial funding from the European Union for the joint purchase of Piorun MANPADS.

This was reported by Yevropeiska Pravda with reference to the press service of the Lithuanian Ministry of Defense.

The head of the ministry, Laurinas Kasciunas, noted in the context of the procurement that one of Lithuania's most important tasks is to strengthen air defense.

“We are pleased to have the opportunity to join the procurement of Piorun short-range mobile air defense systems. Strengthening air defense is one of the most important tasks we set for ourselves. Therefore, the upcoming procurement is as desirable as cooperation with our close ally and neighbor Poland,” said Kasciunas.

The man-portable air defense systems will be purchased through the EU's financial instrument for strengthening the European defense industry through public procurement (EDIRPA).
